Friday 25th March was the first day of the Mid Hants Railway's "Great Spring Steam Gala" on the Watercress Line between Alton and Alresford. The gala saw a non-stop timetable running with 4 trains an hour, made up of three passenger sets, plus a goods train and a steam crane in rescue-train formation. This meant that about every half hour, each of the four stations saw both an Up and a Down train arrive and depart. The loco's featured were three Great Western guest engines, 4953 Pitchford Hall, 3717 City of Truro, 9017 Earl of Berkeley, plus six of the home fleet, 850 Lord Nelson, newly restored "U" Class 31806, Black 5 no 45379, 9F Class no 92212, Standard 5 no 73096, and 42XX Class tank engine 5224. A feature of the gala was the large number of double headers, with unusual combinations like City of Truro with the Standard 5, the U Class with both the GWR tank and with Pitchford Hall, etc
